Intense dark maroon flowers borne tall on upright stems. Geranium phaeum is an ideal variety to grow as a contrast to brighter coloured Geraniums and Hostas in damp shade. It also forms good colour and structure associations with ferns. Makes an excellent addition to a woodland planting scheme, or use at the edge of a border so the dark flowers can be fully appreciated.
Hardy geraniums are the most popular perennials in the UK. They’re tough and easy to grow, most flower for months on end, and many smother weeds effectively. The first geraniums were discovered over 350 years ago by explorers who were looking for medicinal plants in Africa. The genus name is derived from the Greek geranós, meaning crane.
