Foeniculum Vulgare

(Fennel)

Back to Herbs

Foeniculum Vulgare
Fennel is an aromatic deciduous biennial with soft, feathery, almost hair-like foliage. The lacy, finely dissected leaves have swollen leaf stems that clasp the main stalk to form an edible structure.

It grows to around 60cm tall in its first growing season and produces flowering stems that stand a metre tall. These support showy, flat-topped umbels of little golden flowers the following year. It has a sweet fragrance with an elongated root resembling a carrot.
