Masses of lavender-blue flowers with striking, golden-orange centres clothe the whole plant in a striking display of colour between August and September. This is an easy-to-grow, spreading perennial with a basal rosette of hairy, grey-green leaves. The flowers have extremely narrow, needle-like petals which radiate from the central crown attracting bees and butterflies to the garden. Combines beautifully with Echinacea and Rudbeckia.
‘Aster’, the Latin word for ‘Star’ aptly describes their star-shaped flower heads. Asters prefer climates with cool, moist summers, especially cool night temperatures. Plant height ranges upwards from 20cm, depending on variety. Aster is susceptible to powdery mildew and rust diseases, so choose disease-resistant varieties.
